SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters about several upcoming season dates and permit opportunities available in August. Squirrel hunting season opened Aug. 1 and runs through Feb. 15, except during deer firearm season. Applications are available throughout August for free upland game and resident deer either sex hunting permits through HuntIllinois.org. Fall turkey archery over the counter permits are available Aug. 1 through Jan. 18 from licensed vendors on a first come, first served basis until quotas are met. Illinois residents and nonresidents can also purchase over the counter deer archery combination and antlerless only permits while supplies remain. Youth deer resident and nonresident firearm over the counter permits will be available through Oct. 12. Hunters can find season information, regulations and permit details through HuntIllinois.org.
