OREGON — Oregon Junior-Senior High School will begin requiring students to lock their phones and smartwatches in Yondr pouches. The secure pouches, which remain with students but cannot be opened without a magnetic unlocking station, are part of a district-wide policy designed to reduce distractions and improve focus. The new procedure is part of an effort across Illinois to address classroom phone use. According to Principal Jen Speakes, violations of the policy will result in escalating consequences, starting with Saturday school and potential suspensions for repeated offenses.
“But our focus is not about punishing students but just setting boundaries for students to let them grow in their academics, support their mental health, and their personal growth,” she said.
The school purchased over 600 pouches for students and will provide support to families as they adjust to the change. Students return to the classroom in Oregon on August 13th.
