Opportunity House to Open STEAM Lab and Workforce Training Center

SYCAMORE — Opportunity House in Sycamore will open a STEAM lab and workforce training center for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities using a $27,068 community grant from Meta. The lab will provide hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through Project Lead the Way curriculum and include Chromebooks, an interactive display, and staff training. Brooke Montavon, Community Day Services Manager, said, “In addition to the STEM Lab, we are also building just a workforce training center with two workplace development centers where folks are really going to be able to build those hands-on vocational skills, whether that be in manufacturing, kitchen, hospitality, any of those more hands-on skills that they could build.” The programs are expected to open by summer and will serve most clients at Opportunity House, which also operates residential homes, vocational programs, and recreational activities including the Special Olympics.
