OREGON – The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is reminding drivers to stay sober, wear seat belts and follow traffic laws this Halloween as children and families walk through neighborhoods after dark. The office warns that driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or other drugs is illegal and can lead to a DUI, even when cannabis use is legal. Residents are encouraged to plan a safe ride home, designate a sober driver or use a ride sharing service. The sheriff’s office also advises people to walk with a sober friend if impaired and report suspected impaired drivers to law enforcement when it is safe to do so.
“There are a lot of kids and pedestrians out at night. And then, with it falling on the weekend this year, obviously there’s a lot of parties and things going on. So again, everybody just needs to be safe, whether it’s the kids or the adults, everybody just needs to pay attention,” said Ogle County Sheriff Brian Van Vickle. “Don’t drink and drive, and have your flashlights and costumes that you can see out of, and just make sure that everybody’s safe and that everybody enjoys the hopefully nice weather that we look like we’re gonna have. “
Increased traffic enforcement is supported by federal highway safety grants administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
