DEKALB — Several Northern Illinois University athletics teams will volunteer over the coming weeks on a Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County duplex under construction, helping advance what officials describe as the organization’s largest project to date. The duplex will provide affordable homeownership opportunities for two local families through Habitat’s no interest homeownership program. Volunteer build days are scheduled for NIU men’s basketball on June 20, NIU women’s volleyball and women’s basketball on June 27, and NIU football on July 9, with additional participation expected from the soccer team.
“We are really excited to be welcoming the men’s and women’s basketball team, the women’s volleyball team, our NIU football team, as well as the soccer team. So we have a lot of athletic groups from NIU coming out to support this build,” said Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County Executive Director Kim McIver.
The project at 1209 Pleasant St. represents a significant expansion of Habitat’s efforts to provide affordable housing in the community as construction continues through the summer.
