DEKALB — A 33-year-old transient is facing multiple felony charges after police said three women were physically and sexually assaulted Thursday afternoon in downtown DeKalb near the public library and farmers market. The DeKalb Police Department said officers responded about 1:15 p.m. to reports of a woman being assaulted at the DeKalb Public Library on Oak Street. Additional 911 calls reported a second woman was being assaulted nearby in the area of the farmers market. Officers searched the downtown area and arrested Maurice Kemp II, who police said was completely naked when he was taken into custody. Investigators said three women were found to have been physically and or sexually assaulted. Two were taken to a hospital with non life threatening injuries, while the third declined medical treatment. Kemp was taken to a hospital for a narcotic medical evaluation before being released to police custody. The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges that include attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault, attempted criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery on a public way, and unlawful restraint. The investigation remains active, and anyone with information is asked to contact the DeKalb Police Department.
