WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood, R Illinois, joined First Lady Melania Trump and members of the House Ways and Means Committee for a roundtable discussion on improving outcomes for youth aging out of foster care through changes to the John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood. The program provides support services for foster youth as they move into adulthood. LaHood, who chairs the Work and Welfare Subcommittee, said lawmakers are reviewing ways to modernize the program and expand access to resources. He said foster youth often are not aware of available support and that some states face challenges using federal funds. The discussion builds on recent congressional hearings and federal efforts focused on improving child welfare programs and strengthening services for transition age foster youth.
