SPRINGFIELD — Illinois is tightening oversight of crematoriums after Gov. JB Pritzker signed legislation backed by Comptroller Susana Mendoza aimed at preventing mishandling of human remains and improving accountability in the industry. The law, House Bill 4695, expands the Comptroller’s authority to suspend crematory licenses immediately in cases of imminent danger, increases penalties for violations to up to $10,000 per offense, and requires faster reporting when cremations are delayed beyond 30 days. It also requires county coroners or medical examiners to take custody of remains if a license is suspended and allows state inspectors to access facilities and records during investigations. State officials said the changes address past cases of improper storage and recordkeeping that caused distress for families. The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2027.
