SPRINGFIELD — Governor JB Pritzker has proclaimed this week as Farm Safety and Health Week in Illinois, with Thursday focusing on the dangers of confined work spaces. Farmers face risks in grain bins, silos, manure pits, and storage tanks from toxic gases, oxygen deficiency, and mechanical hazards. Accidents have occurred when workers entered these spaces without proper training or safety measures. Farmers are urged to avoid confined spaces when possible and to assess hazards carefully before entering, using external tools or pumps to reduce direct entry.
