Illinois Attorney General Condemns Trump Attacks on Nonprofits

CHICAGO  – Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined a coalition of 10 state attorneys general in condemning President Trump’s directive to investigate nonprofits and charities that support causes or activities he opposes. The Sept. 25 memorandum directed the Justice Department to potentially prosecute organizations, including major foundations, under the guise of combating “political violence,” raising concerns that it targets nonprofits for exercising their First Amendment rights. Raoul and the coalition said the actions threaten freedom of speech, freedom of association, and donors’ intent, and represent an unprecedented attempt to intimidate charitable organizations.
