Illinois Agencies Warn Seniors About Winter Fire Risks

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Fire Marshal and the Illinois Department of Public Health are reminding residents, especially adults over 65, to take precautions against winter fires as cold temperatures increase the use of heating equipment. Seniors face higher risks of injury and death from fires due to slower reaction times and mobility challenges, with those over 85 four times as likely to die in a fire as the general population. Agencies advise keeping space heaters away from flammable materials, testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly, inspecting furnaces and chimneys annually, and ensuring all exits are accessible. Families and caregivers are urged to check on older adults and create emergency plans to reduce fire risks.
