Durand Man Arrested After Head On Crash Near Byron

BYRON — The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office says a 60-year-old Durand man was arrested after a head on crash with injuries Thursday around 8 p.m. in the 10000 block of North Illinois Route 2. Deputies said the man was driving north and allegedly attempted to pass in a marked no passing zone, striking the rear driver’s side of a southbound SUV driven by a 61-year-old Oregon man before leaving the roadway and hitting a large tree. The Durand man was taken to Swedish American Hospital in Rockford for evaluation. He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and cited for improper passing on the left, failure to reduce speed, and improper lane usage. He was released on a notice to appear with a future court date. Byron Police, Byron Fire and EMS, and Stillman Valley EMS assisted at the scene.
