DeKalb Paint A Plug Program Ties Public Art to America 250 Celebration

DEKALB — The City of DeKalb is continuing its America 250 celebration through the Paint A Plug public art program, with the Citizens Community Enhancement Commission encouraging artists to create designs inspired by the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence as they decorate fire hydrants across the city. Officials said public art projects are a key part of the citywide commemoration, which also includes a Lincoln Highway mural, a downtown lighting installation, and a utility box mural program focused on the anniversary theme. Commission Chair Brad Hoey said the Paint A Plug project remains one of the city’s most popular public art efforts and encourages creativity tied to patriotism, independence, historic figures, and cultural heritage, though artists may still choose other themes. The program is open to artists of all skill levels, and applications are being accepted with a Nov. 1 deadline for completion. Helen’s Hair Designs and Spa is also supporting the effort by donating $50 Gordon Hardware gift cards for paint supplies to the first five approved artists.
