DeKalb Council Tables House Of Embers Proposal

DEKALB – The DeKalb City Council Monday tabled a proposal from Kristian McCullough to convert the vacant property at 220 N. Third Street into a private club known as House of Embers. McCullough is proposing a cigar lounge in one of the building’s smaller rooms, with cigars available for purchase or storage in lockers for club members. The larger former sanctuary would be used for drinks, cards and conversation. The proposal would require changes to city smoking regulations, a new retail tobacco license, a special use permit, changes to the Unified Development Ordinance and a new liquor license. City staff also identified building issues that would need further review, including ventilation, exit and emergency lighting, fire prevention features, bathrooms and accessibility requirements. Council wanted to wait for the DeKalb Liquor Commissioner, Mayor Cohen Barnes, to return to the council and get a consensus from other liquor license holders regarding the proposed business.
