DeKalb Council Approves Private Therapeutic Day School

DEKALB – The DeKalb City Council Monday night approved rezoning and a special use permit for 315 N. Sixth Street to allow Specialized Education of Illinois, Inc., to open the High Road School of DeKalb. The southern two-thirds of the property was rezoned from Light Industrial to Light Commercial to permit the private school, which will serve up to 100 students ages 3 to 21 with emotional, learning, and intellectual disabilities. The school will employ up to 64 staff members and is scheduled to open in August 2026. Interior updates and code compliance work are planned with no exterior changes. The council approved conditions including a safety plan reviewed by police and fire departments, designated employee parking, directional signage, and enrollment limits.
