DeKalb Approves $3.29 Million Asphalt Resurfacing Contract for 2026 Street Program

DEKALB — The DeKalb City Council approved a resolution awarding a contract to Curran Contracting Company for the 2026 street maintenance program, authorizing $3,276,754.99 for asphalt resurfacing with a local share not to exceed $12,222, bringing the total project cost to $3,288,977.21. City staff said the work includes resurfacing West Hillcrest Drive, County Farm Road, the Overlook Pointe subdivision, parts of Greenwood Acres, Market Square patching and striping, and several north side alleys, along with an additional base bid alternate for work on North First Street. Officials said only Curran submitted bids for the project after other contractors declined, citing rising costs tied to fuel and asphalt materials, which increased after global oil price spikes earlier this year. The base bid and first alternate exceed the $3 million street maintenance budget, but staff said the difference will be covered through internal savings and reallocations, including construction supervision savings, deferred vehicle costs, and other fund contributions without increasing use of the general fund reserve. Work is scheduled to begin in late May and must be completed by August 7, 2026.
