DeKalb Abates Taxes for City Bond Payments

DEKALB — The DeKalb City Council heard a first read Monday night an ordinance to abate property taxes for the city’s outstanding general obligation bonds for 2025. The city has five bond issues, including those funding a police station, public works projects, the library expansion, and a new fire station, and will use other revenue sources to cover principal and interest payments instead of property taxes. The abatement allows the city to continue paying debt from the General Fund while keeping the tax levy for these bonds at zero. The total abated levy for 2025 is more than $2.7 million, covering all outstanding bonds.
