CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Revenue is reminding taxpayers that the deadline to file 2024 state individual income tax returns is Tuesday. The department began processing returns on January 27, the same day the IRS began accepting federal returns. Eligible Illinois residents can file their federal taxes through the IRS Direct File program and transfer that information into the MyTax Illinois system to file state taxes at no cost. Taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically and choose direct deposit for faster processing and refunds. Those who cannot meet the deadline will automatically receive a six-month extension, though any taxes owed must be paid by April 15th to avoid penalties. Extended phone hours will be available for assistance today and tomorrow.
