Dangerous Heat Dome Expected to Bring Triple Digit Temperatures to Chicago and Northern Illinois

CHICAGO — Forecasters say a “mega heat dome” is expected to build over the eastern half of the United States starting today, bringing potentially dangerous heat and humidity to Chicago and northern Illinois. Weather models indicate two smaller heat domes will merge into one larger system, allowing temperatures to surge well into the triple digits across parts of the Midwest. Chicago could see highs near 102 degrees today, with even higher readings possible farther south and west across the region. Meteorologists warn the heat could expand deeper into the Great Lakes by midweek, pushing dangerous conditions into parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The mega heat dome could also spark tropical storm development near the southern U.S. in the Atlantic and the Gulf.
