Cubs lose pitcher Javier Assad due to an injury

Chicago, IL – The Chicago Cubs are facing a challenge at the top of their rotation as right-handed starter Javier Assad is dealing with an oblique strain. The team confirmed the injury, and manager Craig Counsell provided an update to reporters, stating that Assad will be shut down until the pain subsides.

Counsell expressed cautious optimism, noting that he doesn’t expect Assad to be sidelined for an extended period. “We’re taking it day by day, but we don’t think it’ll be a long-term issue,” Counsell said.

Assad, who had a solid season in 2024, finishing with a 7-6 record and a 3.73 ERA across 29 starts, will be a key piece of the Cubs’ pitching staff once he returns to full health. His performance last year was instrumental in the team’s push for the postseason, and his absence could leave a gap at the top of the rotation.

The Cubs will likely lean on their depth in the coming weeks, with eyes on Assad’s recovery timeline as they continue to navigate the early stages of the season.
