COMPTON — A Saturday night fire destroyed a single-family home in the 100 block of Walnut Street, leaving two dogs dead and four residents displaced. Compton Fire Chief Steve Gilmore said a neighbor spotted flames on the front porch and called shortly after 9 p.m. The homeowners were not inside at the time. Departments from Paw Paw, West Brooklyn, Ashton, Ogle-Lee, Lee, and Rochelle assisted Compton firefighters, who remained on scene until about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and returned in the morning with excavation equipment to locate hot spots. The American Red Cross is assisting the residents. The fire remains under investigation.
