BYRON – Byron is moving forward with plans for a roundabout at East Mill Road and Tower Road while also pursuing funding for a multi-use path along Tower Road. The Byron City Council voted 6 to 1 to approve Fehr Graham’s Phase 1 engineering contract for the roundabout, which is currently projected for construction in spring 2029. The current design calls for a three legged, single lane roundabout. The city is also preparing an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) grant application for a path along the west side of Tower Road from Everett Lane to East Mill Road.
Byron city engineer Jason Stoll said the path could be built at the same time as the roundabout if funding is approved.
“If funding is approved for the shared use path, I would envision that it would be like a 2029 project. So a long way to go and we still have to get the grant, so we’ll see how it goes,” said Stoll.
The west side route received the strongest support because it provides more space and greater separation from traffic. The city plans to continue work on the grant application, with the funding window open until Oct. 5.
