BYRON – The City of Byron is considering a request for an Illinois Department of Transportation speed study along Route 2 as officials look at concerns about traffic speeds near the Creekside and Mill Creek Bridge area. City staff are still compiling information needed for the request. Because Route 2 is a state roadway, the city does not control the speed limit. IDOT may be able to conduct the study at no cost to the city. If IDOT declines, the city could hire a consultant and submit the study results to IDOT for review, although the cost of an outside study is not yet known. Officials also discussed lower cost safety measures that could address the concern without changing the speed limit. Options include adding warning signs, moving signs farther from the curve, improving the visibility of existing speed limit signs and cutting back vegetation that blocks signs or drivers’ views. Staff will continue reviewing the options.
