Lead Service Line Work Continues in Byron After EPA Violation Notice

BYRON – The City of Byron is continuing work to identify lead and galvanized service lines as it prepares for future replacement work and additional federal funding. The city expects to learn more in the next couple of months about potential additional Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding. Investigations to identify the service line materials are ongoing. The city received an EPA violation notice Sept. 2 after it failed to report that required resident notifications had been completed. Residents were properly notified when lead or galvanized service lines were identified, but the city did not notify the EPA that the notifications had been completed. City staff described the issue as a reporting error, and there is no fine or monetary penalty associated with the violation. The issue will be listed in the city’s Consumer Confidence Report as a failure to submit the required report, and staff will submit the necessary paperwork to correct the matter. Byron previously identified two known lead service lines and 84 galvanized lines and received a $40,000 EPA grant to help complete its service line inventory.
