DIXON — A 21-year-old man and Volunteer Firefighter from Kasbeer in Bureau County was arrested Friday after authorities said he intentionally set a large grass fire at the Green River State Wildlife Management Area. Witnesses reported seeing the man start the fire and detained him until deputies arrived. Trent W. Schafer was charged with one count of arson, with additional charges pending in Lee and Bureau counties for other alleged fires. Authorities said about 700 acres burned as dry conditions and strong winds fueled the fire. Multiple area fire departments and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources responded. The fire was brought under control by mid-afternoon.
