Underwood Introduces Bills to Expand Access to Farmers’ Markets and Local Food

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Lauren Underwood introduced two bills to expand access to farmers’ markets and local food in Illinois. The legislation strengthens USDA programs, increases funding, and reduces barriers for farmers to sell directly to families, including those using the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. The bills provide technical support for farmers, open new markets in underserved areas, and modernize systems to make it easier for families to purchase fresh, local food. Farmers’ markets across northern Illinois offer fruits, vegetables, and other Illinois-grown products, but current rules limit access for families and farmers.
