Treasurer Frerichs to Return WWII Purple Heart to Family in Oak Lawn

OAK LAWN — Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs will return a World War II Purple Heart medal to the family of a late veteran during a ceremony this morning at the Johnson-Phelps VFW Post 5220 in Oak Lawn. The medal, recovered through the state’s Unclaimed Property program, is being reunited with the family as part of Operation Purple Heart, a statewide effort to return military honors found in abandoned safe deposit boxes. This will mark the 17th Purple Heart Frerichs has returned, the most by any state treasurer.
