Time Change Reminder:  Check Smoke Alarms

CHICAGO – As Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal urges residents to test and replace any broken or expired smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years, and if your alarm was made before October 2013, it’s time for a new one with a 10-year sealed battery. The National Fire Protection Association reports that nearly 60% of home fire deaths occurred in homes without working smoke alarms. Families are encouraged to develop and practice a fire escape plan, ensuring all household members know two ways out of every room and have a designated meeting place outside.
