CHICAGO – Today marks National Senior Citizens Day, with a focus on honoring the contributions of older adults to families, communities, and society. First established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan, the day recognizes the achievements of seniors and raises awareness of issues that affect them, including health, economic stability, and social well-being. The senior population in the United States is around 61 million, accounting for more than 20% of the U.S. population as the baby boomer generation continues to age.
