ROCHELLE – A Cinco de Mayo celebration is set for Saturday, May 2 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Rochelle Rec Center parking lot. Organizers said the annual event has been held in the community for more than a decade and was moved to the Rec Center due to ongoing downtown construction. The celebration will feature four live bands, a mechanical bull, a kid zone, and a variety of craft vendors and food.
Rochelle Councilwoman Rosaelia Arteaga said the event is open to the entire community and brings people together to celebrate culture and tradition.
“I think that it’s important for the Hispanic community, but also everybody. I think Cinco de Mayo is well known throughout the United States and everybody is excited to get together to celebrate. We’re celebrating both Mexico and the United States and we want everybody to come out and have fun. I do think that because it’s the first event here in Rochelle, we kind of welcome everybody to come out and hopefully enjoy some good weather and some food and listen to some music and just have fun,” Arteaga said.
