Red Covered Bridge Repairs Begin in Bureau County

PRINCETON — The Illinois Department of Transportation has begun a $1.25 million project to repair the historic Red Covered Bridge north of Princeton. The bridge has been closed since a truck severely damaged it in 2023. Work includes replacing the roof, damaged beams and siding, with additional repairs and safety upgrades planned for 2027. The project is expected to be completed by June 2027. Built in 1863, the bridge is the only state owned covered bridge in Illinois still open to traffic. Motorists should expect delays during construction and consider alternate routes.
