POPLAR GROVE — Authorities are investigating after a single engine plane crashed Saturday afternoon in a residential neighborhood in Poplar Grove in Boone County. Officials said the crash happened around 4 p.m. on Springmeadow Drive about 10 miles east of Rockford and roughly one and a half miles south of Poplar Grove Airport. The aircraft was identified as a Whittman Tailwind airplane and one person was aboard, though the condition of that person has not been released. The crash damaged a fence and gas lines, leading to temporary evacuations while crews worked with Nicor Gas Company to secure the leak. No injuries were reported inside nearby homes. The National Transportation Safety Board and local authorities continue to investigate the cause.
