OREGON — Mayor Ken Williams has proclaimed today as Arbor Day in Oregon, urging residents to plant and protect trees. The observance, first established in 1872 by the Nebraska Board of Agriculture and marked by planting more than a million trees, is now celebrated nationwide. Trees help reduce soil erosion, lower heating and cooling costs, clean the air, provide wildlife habitat, and support wood and paper production. Local trees also enhance property values, boost business areas, and beautify the community while offering enjoyment and spiritual renewal.
