OREGON – Ogle County is deciding whether to fix or remove an old water line once used by the former courthouse jail after a leak was found under Illinois Route 2. The City of Oregon shut off water to a hydrant connected to the line, which was put in during 2022 to avoid digging up the highway. County officials say repairing the leak could lead to more breaks and would still require permits, traffic control, and road work.
Oregon City Manager Darin DeHaan said the decision to shut it off was due to their concern of interfering with the Autumn on Parade event. He noted that the hydrant is used most often as the water source for vendors at the festival, and will be an issue that needs to be overcome come October.
Cost estimates are being sought for the various options, including repair or removal.
