Ogle County Sheriff Warns Of Home Repair Scams

OREGON – The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents, especially senior citizens, about possible sealcoating and home repair scams. The sheriff’s office said scammers may arrive at homes without being invited and offer discounted driveway sealing, roof repairs, tree trimming or other work before increasing the price, doing poor quality work or demanding immediate payment. Residents are urged not to allow unknown people inside their homes, provide upfront payments or personal and banking information, and should request written estimates, proof of insurance and references before agreeing to work. Residents should independently verify contractors and talk with a trusted family member, friend or neighbor before making a decision. Anyone acting suspiciously, refusing to leave or pressuring a resident for money should be told to leave and 911 should be called if necessary.
