MONROE CENTER – The Monroe Township Fire Protection District is partnering with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance to distribute free smoke detectors through the “Be Alarmed!” program. They hope to improve fire safety by providing and installing working alarms, replacing outdated ones, and educating residents on proper placement and maintenance. Deputy Chief Richard Wilson said that with the time change this weekend, now is the time to make sure your alarms are working and installed in the correct location in your home.
“The minimum standard is one per floor and within 15 feet of a bedroom or a sleeping area. And now that I’ve been in a bunch of houses the biggest thing is that we know that people sleep in different parts of the house,” he said.
Monroe Township Fire Protection District residents interested in a smoke detector should call (815)393-4222.
