Loyola’s Beloved Sister Jean Dies at 106

CHICAGO – Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the longtime chaplain of Loyola University Chicago’s men’s basketball team and a national icon during the school’s 2018 Final Four run, has died at 106. Loyola officials called her a “source of wisdom and grace” who inspired generations of students and fans alike. A member of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sister Jean joined Loyola in 1961 and became team chaplain in 1994. She was inducted into the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017 and honored by both Pope Francis and President Joe Biden for her lifetime of service. Her legacy of faith and compassion will continue to be celebrated across the Loyola community.
