LEAF RIVER — A 44-year-old Leaf River man died Thursday after a single vehicle rollover crash in the 2000 block of East Illinois Route 72. Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. and determined a minivan was traveling east when it crossed the westbound lane and went onto the shoulder for unknown reasons. The van slid off the roadway, struck a fence and rolled several times, ejecting the driver, Michael A. Wiltzius. Wiltzius was taken by Byron EMS to Mercy Riverside Hospital in Rockford with life threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation. Byron police, Byron Fire and EMS and MD1 assisted at the scene.
