SPRINGFIELD – For the upcoming Memorial Day weekend and the rest of the summer, before you jump in the water, the Illinois Department of Public Health wants to remind you of some simple things you can do to keep yourself and others healthy while swimming. Stay out of the water if you have tummy problems or diarrhea, and shower before using the pool. With children, be sure to take them on bathroom breaks. It is important to remember that swim diapers and swim pants are not leak proof. One of the most important tips is to always keep an eye on children in the water. Every day, two children in the U.S. younger than 14 years old die from drowning. It is one of the leading causes of injury death for children 1–4 years of age.
