SPRINGFIELD — State officials are continuing to urge Illinois residents to take precautions as a prolonged stretch of dangerous heat and humidity moves across the state this week. The National Weather Service expects heat index values to remain 100 degrees during the day in many areas, with some locations reaching 105 to 110 degrees through Friday. Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, limiting time outdoors, wearing light clothing, checking on vulnerable neighbors and never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles. Residents who need relief from the heat can find free cooling centers across Illinois at keepcool.illinois.gov.
