Illinois Senate Passes E-Bike Safety Bill

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Senate unanimously approved a bill setting new safety rules for high speed e-bikes and other electric devices that can exceed 28 miles per hour. The measure now moves to the Illinois House. Riders of those devices would need a driver license along with title registration and insurance, while high speed scooters and similar devices would be barred from exceeding 28 miles per hour on roads and paths. The bill keeps the current three class e bike system but sets new minimum age limits. State leaders say it would create consistent rules across Illinois. If signed into law the changes would take effect January 1, 2027 with some exemptions for older devices.
