Illinois Farm Bureau Secures Black Vulture Kill Permits for Livestock Producers

BLOOMINGTON — Illinois Farm Bureau has secured statewide black vulture kill permits through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that are valid through the end of the year, giving livestock producers additional tools to address threats to young animals. Officials said black vultures can injure or kill newborn livestock and birthing mothers, leading to significant losses for farmers. The organization is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to issue required sub permits and state approvals for eligible producers. Black vultures are protected under federal and state law, meaning control actions require authorization from both federal and state agencies.
