SPRINGFIELD — Illinois families and educators are being reminded of state tax credits that can help offset school related expenses. The Illinois K 12 Education Expense Tax Credit allows parents and legal guardians to claim a 25 percent credit on qualified education expenses over $250, with a maximum credit of $750 per household. Eligible expenses include tuition, book rentals and lab fees. Qualifying educators who work at least 900 hours during the school year can claim up to $500 for out of pocket classroom materials and supplies, or up to $1,000 for married couples who both qualify and file jointly. The Illinois Department of Revenue recommends taxpayers keep physical or digital receipts for qualifying expenses to document their claims when filing state income taxes.
