SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency recognized fifth and sixth grade students from across the state during its annual Poster Poetry and Prose Contest awards ceremony April 11 at the Illinois State Library, where students were honored for creative work focused on air pollution and environmental awareness. The contest invites schools to submit student posters and writing based on a yearly theme, which this year was Together for Healthier Air, and entries are selected for awards and recognition. Top winners in poetry and prose and poster categories were named from several communities across Illinois. Students, families, and teachers attended the ceremony, where winners received certificates, ribbons, and environmental reference books for their school libraries. Among those recognized were students from Mary Morgan Elementary in Byron, where Olive Anderson, Jacey Jones, and Charlotte Leonhardt each received special recognition for their entries.
