Officials said electronic filing remains the fastest and most reliable option, with most refunds issued within about four weeks when filed without errors and sent by direct deposit. Taxpayers can use the My Tax Illinois system to file returns, make payments, check refund status, and access tax records, or choose other filing methods including tax professionals or paper forms. The department warned that recent changes by the United States Postal Service may affect postmark dates, meaning mailed returns could appear late if sent close to the deadline. Taxpayers who need more time to file are granted an automatic six month extension to October 15, but any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest. Officials said assistance is available by phone, including extended hours on April 14 and April 15.
