Illinois Corn and Soybean Crops Progressing Steadily, USDA Reports

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois corn and soybean crops showed steady progress, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Corn silking reached 9%, ahead of the five-year average of 5%, with 71% of the crop rated good to excellent. Soybeans emerged at 94%, matching the national rate, while 21% of Illinois soybeans had started blooming, well above the average of 13%. Only 1% had begun setting pods. The soybean condition was 54% good to excellent. Winter wheat harvesting in Illinois reached 69%, close to the five-year average of 73%, with 67% of the crop rated good to excellent. Farmers had 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork during the week, with most topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions reported as adequate.
