SPRINGFIELD — The crops in Illinois corn and soybean fields are progressing well this season despite dryness, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Corn in Illinois reached 87 percent dented and 27 percent mature this week, all near or above the five-year averages, with 2 percent already harvested. Soybeans show 36 percent dropping leaves, more than double the average pace. Crop condition ratings show 53 percent of Illinois corn and 54 percent of soybeans are in good to excellent shape.
