SPRINGFIELD — Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced that the Bright Start 529 college savings plan has surpassed $14 billion in assets as it marks its 25th anniversary. The plan now serves more than 327,000 accounts, with 22,000 opened this year alone, and contributions totaling about $800 million. Bright Start 529, along with the advisor-guided Bright Directions 529, helps Illinois families save for college with tax advantages, low fees, and professionally managed investment portfolios. Over 250,000 students have used the programs to attend universities, trade schools, and apprenticeships nationwide. The plan has received national recognition from Morningstar, CNBC, and Business Insider as one of the nation’s top-rated 529 plans.
