Illinois Agriculture Department Reopens Cover Crop Program With 7 Million Dollar Grant

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Agriculture is reopening a cover crop program backed by a $7 million federal grant to support farmers using new methods to plant cover crops. The three year program will provide financial incentives to producers and landowners for crops planted in 2026 through 2028, with pre enrollment opening April 1 and applications accepted beginning April 15 through May 1. Officials said the program was paused last year due to uncertainty over federal funding but has now resumed with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Payments will vary by planting method, and applications will be reviewed on a first come basis by county with assistance from local soil and water conservation districts.
