IDOT and ISP Urge Drivers to Stay Focused During Distracted Driving Awareness Month

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police (ISP), and local law enforcement agencies are reminding drivers to stay focused on the road during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Distracted driving, which includes using a cellphone or engaging in other activities that take attention away from driving, is a leading cause of traffic accidents and fatalities. Between 2019 and 2023, 260 people were killed, and nearly 30,000 were injured in crashes involving distracted drivers. In 2023 alone, 58 fatalities were attributed to distracted driving. Authorities encourage drivers to avoid texting, scrolling through social media, or using their phones while driving, and to pull over safely if they need to send a message. The campaign, supported by federal funds, coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s effort to prevent distracted driving and promote safe driving habits.
